Stop being stupid
I was recently at an outplacement event where I was helping a client who had lost a contract and had a large team of people that would require help in finding new employment.
I did several 10-15 minutes interviews to get basic information – name, contact information, skills etc., gave out my cards and asked people to contact me with their resumes so that we can hold a more professional interview. The ball is now on their court to get in touch with me so that I can help find new positions for them.
One of the last candidates that I talked to had me totally shocked. She had just started on this contract 6 weeks ago and kept asking me “How much money do I have to pay you to find me a new job?”. What is she talking about?? You don’t have to pay me; you never pay me or any other recruiter for that matter. Then she disclosed that she had worked with another recruiter a while back and had to pay the recruiter a fee for them to find her a job. Now I was totally floored. Stop being stupid. Stop wasting your money. Do a Google search and you’ll find lots of good, ethical people in your area that will be happy to represent you without you having to pay them. Or go to American Staffing Association and search for recruiters.
In this day and age, where information is available so readily – why would someone pay a recruiter to find them a job? For every recruiter that asks you, the jobseeker, for money, there’s 10 other recruiters who will place you for free. Why? Because we get paid by our clients to find you. It’s not the other way around. It’s never the other way around. Are you kidding me? Don’t ever pay someone to find you a job.
